Carousels first became popular in the United States in the early 1900s. Original carousels were hand-crafted by immigrant craftsmen who excelled at their trade. At the height of their popularity, there were over 7,000 carousels created. Sadly, today, only about 300 of these remain.
The main reason for the decline in carousels was the direct result of the Great Depression of the 1930s. There simply wasn’t enough money to maintain these magnificent machines, and they began to deteriorate. Natural disasters continued to do damage carousels until most fell beyond any hope of repair. Although carousels originated in Europe, it was in the US that they really bloomed, and their popularity lasted about 25 years. Today, miniature carousels have become popular at Christmas time.
